Concept illustration of the entrance feature.

The City constructed an entrance feature for the Hillside neighbourhood. The design was developed based on input from the community. This is one of several projects to implement the Hillside Area Revitalization Plan. Other projects include decorative street sign toppers, new trails and boulevard tree planting.

BACKGROUND
In 2017, City Council adopted the Hillside Area Revitalization Plan.

The entrance feature is one of many initiatives for the neighbourhood identified in the plan. Other initiatives include: unique street signs, boulevard trees, and trails.

HOW WAS THE COMMUNITY ENGAGED?

The engagement plan for the Hillside neighbourhood entrance feature consists of two phases:

Stories - We are asking residents to share stories about the neighbourhood to tell us what they love about it and to share some of their favorite memories that happened here. The stories will be used to draw themes that will inspire the logo design.

Survey - Based on the themes from the stories, our designer will create three logos. A survey will be used to ask residents their thoughts about the different logo ideas. That feedback will be used to refine the ideas into a final logo. Our design team will also create three sign options and three landscaping options for the entrance feature for residents to vote on. The final design will be based on the feedback received from residents.

Note: The engagement plan originally included three phases. Phases 2 and 3 were combined to create a more efficient process.

I moved to Hillside a few months ago and I love it here. I love the lilac bushes, they are something I remember from long, long ago and they comfort me and when I smell them, I feel at home. The sledding hill at Hillside school is so much fun too and the playground is so much fun and I love Hillside school so much.

Hillside Community School - Grade 6 Student Story

When I first moved to Grande Prairie, everything looked so different. I had no idea where I was, and the only source of direction I had was my Mom. Besides, this was pretty much the first time I’d ever remember living in the City. I was so used to the country. But, as time went on, I began to warm up to the strange place. I began to recognize which street I was on, or at least the houses around me. The kids at school seemed friendly too. Everything started to become familiar, slowly but surely. I learned the houses... Lots of trees (big ones!) and pretty flowers everywhere, and a big hill that I can play on. All the green is amazing and in the winter it is nice to go down the hill with magic carpets. A lot of patrollers makes me feel safe and the people in the area are kind.
