Swimming Lessons

I’ll always remember the one day I had swimming lessons as a kid with our class and our instructor had us treading water in the deep end when “Follow Me” by Uncle Kracker came. Our Instructor started signing along and we all joined in as we were breathlessly treading water. It was such a fun time and one I’ll always remember. On the way home from swimming lessons, I’ll never forget the feeling of reaching my bus seat, digging into my lunch kit and eating those leftover animal crackers like they were a pack of dunkaroos or gushers 😄

Summer of 2009 we did a major shutdown on the Leisure Centre pool. Normally it would be a quick 3 week shut down. It turned into 8 weeks because of new boilers being put in the mechanical room. Upon inspection they discovered we had asbestos in the ceiling of the mechanical room. A company was brought in and they removed all of the asbestos. Tests were done on the rest of the facility and it was cleared. I worked with Ken Santarossa and the Facilities department on this shutdown. The Facilities department was responsible for keeping our building running and all city buildings running. Facilities department was a big part of my life at the Leisure Centre. William Vavrek did a photo spread on the inside of the Leisure Centre pool. Pretty special, I had a comment for each picture he posted. He might be someone to get in contact with. We had pink bathrooms for the Public, the Males were eventually painted blue. There was a Sauna in the male change room, it was eventually pulled out for more locker space. The staff female locker room was very small, one shutdown we moved into the male staff bathroom, which was so much bigger. The males moved to ours, we didn’t have many male lifeguards. I swam at the LC, and became a Lifeguard when my girls Cassidy and Reeghan were 6 and 3. I moved up the ranks becoming an Aquatic leadhand. I would have to say working as a Crew Chief lifeguard was probably the best job I have had working for the City of Grande Prairie. The pool was closed on holidays. So myself, girls and Yogi Halladay (who was a Senior Guard) would swim. We swam all the holidays, before shifts and Sunday’s. Yogi actually tried to talk me into swimming Christmas morning one year. She said a quick 2k swim. Had to say no to that one. My youngest daughter Reeghan became a lifeguard working at both LC and Eastlink while getting her teaching degree. Reeghan worked last summer at Eastlink and the Outdoor pool. She is back to work this summer at Eastlink/AOP.
