Grande Prairie’s urban forest isn't just a collection of trees; it's the vibrant green heart of our city, comprising both the majestic trees in our parks and streets as well as the lush greenery tucked away in natural areas, backyards, commercial, and industrial areas.

The urban forest provides our city with a host of incredible benefits, from cleaner air and a healthier environment to spaces for relaxation and recreation. It's an essential part of what makes Grande Prairie such a wonderful place to call home.

Now, Grande Prairie is embarking on the creation of an Urban Forest Strategy that will safeguard, enhance, and celebrate our urban forest for generations to come. This visionary strategy will be built upon a foundation of community input, and that's where you come in!

The development of the Urban Forest Strategy is utilizing existing ground verified data sets from City operations in conjunction with remotely sensed data to evaluate existing conditions of the urban forest. Ongoing maintenance of the datasets and future data needs are a consideration within the scope of the Urban Forest Strategy. Working closely with the City, this information is used to help inform the development of the strategy which include a set of actions and recommendations. Implementation of specific planting projects is not within the scope of this strategy development. Any future projects derived from this strategy would undergo further assessment and planning prior to implementation. The consultant’s portfolio is available on their company website at silvacom.com

Private tree maintenance is a scope being evaluated within the current Urban Forest Strategy development. The Urban Forest Strategy will also identify areas and topics where a public education campaign would be beneficial.

The resources required for tree care service levels is part of the scope being analyzed within the Urban Forest Strategy development.

An Indigenous engagement session took place on October 19th, and the findings of this session will continue to be built upon as the strategy is developed. The City does have an Indigenous Relations Advisor and will continue to work with Indigenous peoples as the strategy and action items are developed.

There are many benefits that can be derived from urban forests. The survey included a sample of benefits across various categories of services they can provide that include provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural. While wind was not specifically mentioned, it is identified within the Parks and Open Space Master Plan, and is a consideration given to new planting projects that face open areas.
