During the 2023 budget deliberations, funding was approved for the construction of a multi-use and multi-season covered outdoor structure. This project aligns with Council's Strategic Priority of Quality of Life and Focus Area of Active Lifestyle; encouraging and facilitating healthy individual and family lifestyles that are inclusive and affordable to residents.

At the April 17 City Council meeting, Council approved funding to enable replacement of the current outdoor rink at Swanavon with a covered outdoor structure.

The City of Grande Prairie recognizes that recreation is integral for a healthy and vibrant community. This outdoor recreation amenity aims to increase social interaction, build community pride, and offer welcoming experiences to support an inclusive community.

The covered outdoor structure is intended to be used for a variety of functions and programs including, but not limited to:

Summer activities:

  • Mobile skate park
  • Pickleball courts
  • Basketball courts
  • Programming space
  • Gathering space

Winter activities:

  • Recreational skating
  • Recreational hockey

Next Steps

At the May 15 Council meeting, Council directed administration to bring back a report regarding consultation and other information on the Swanavon Outdoor Rink. Clarification was made at the May 23 Operational Services Committee to include alternative sites and designs in addition to the Swanavon site and rink option previously presented.
