Consultation has concluded
The Grande Prairie Museum is undergoing an expansion to create more space to accommodate its extensive collection. A functional and spatial review conducted in 2016 identified that more space was needed to house the Museum's collection to industry standards. Currently, much of the collection is stored at a rented off-site location.
In 2023, the Heritage Discovery Centre (HDC) in Centre 2000 closed to create a larger space for the South Peace Regional Archives (SPRA). The SPRA recently vacated their former space in the Grande Prairie Museum, providing an opportunity to go ahead with the expansion proposal.
The expansion proposal aims to:
Increase the collection storage space
Add a new exhibit gallery
Add improvements to the existing structure
The proposed addition will create a museum that meets Federal and Provincial heritage guidelines and enhances the Grande Prairie Museum’s current position as the leading community museum within the South Peace Region.
Open Houses
As part of the expansion project, residents were invited to attend two open houses to share their feedback on items such as what themes and topics the museum should focus on as part of its expansion.
The open houses included 30-minute guided tours of the Museum with an opportunity to share feedback afterwards. All community members were welcome to attend, and registration was not required.
An online survey was also available through the survey tool below for residents to share their input on current services and programs the museum offers and express their ideas for new exhibits and programs. The survey closed April 14.
