The City of Grande Prairie recognizes that sports, recreation and culture are integral for a healthy, vibrant community. A neighbourhood community recreation facility is being proposed to provide inclusive, affordable, accessible recreation opportunities for all members of the community. The ideal facility will serve a diverse range of recreational and leisure needs. This facility will also act as a potential reception centre for City response to a large-scale emergency or disaster, adding to the municipal inventory of facilities available for disaster response throughout the region.
At the September 1, 2020 Community Services meeting a motion was passed that directed Administration to bring a report back to Committee, prior to the 2021 budget deliberations, with options to establish a low cost neighbourhood scale general purpose indoor recreation facility.
At the September 22, 2020 Special Council Meeting, funds from the ICIP-COVID 19 Resilience Stream in the amount of $4 Million were allocated for this project including the 20% matching component (municipal contribution of $800,000) required by the grant.
Administration presented potential sites for consideration at the Community Services Committee on October 13, 2020. As a result of discussions, the following two sites are currently being considered for the final location:
Cobblestone East (adjacent to Riverstone School)
Smith
During the October 13, 2020 Community Services Committee meeting, a motion was passed that Committee recommend Council approve the Smith site for the Activity & Reception Centre.
At the City Council meeting on October 19, 2020, Council passed a motion that approved the Smith site as the location for the future Activity & Reception Centre.
Next Steps
Additional opportunities will be made available for the community to provide feedback regarding potential programming hosted at the Activity & Reception Centre prior to the development of the site. Stay tuned for more information!
