96 St Road Rehabilitation | 100 Avenue and 108 Avenue

The City is exploring design options which would include removing the deteriorated service roads located on the west side of 96 St.

Additionally, the City is looking at building an additional sidewalk along the east side of the roadway. The removal of the service roads and addition of sidewalks will aid in bringing this section of the roadway up to current practices and create a safer more efficient traffic and pedestrian flow.

Open House

Residents who live along 96 St from 100 Ave and 108 Ave are invited to an Open House to chat or ask questions directly with City Engineers and our consultant, Beairsto and Associates Engineering Ltd. about the service road removal. Currently, there are no design concepts developed at this time, so these discussions will help inform the project team as they start to prepare designs.

The Open House will take place:

  • Date: March 23, 2023
  • Time: 6 - 8 p.m.
  • Location: Faith Lutheran Church (9610 108 Ave)

  • Share I personally frequent this street as a pedestrian and I live in my owned home on 96st. Pedestrian use is very high in this area so I hope the intention is to improve such infrastructure. I look forward to the east sidewalk. I'm concerned that the city will try to increase road space to accommodate traffic. Has there yet been an indication as to the city's priorities? Traffic is already quite loud. on Facebook Share I personally frequent this street as a pedestrian and I live in my owned home on 96st. Thank you for the question. Currently we are just exploring ideas at this point as we are not not in the detailed design phase yet. However, our intention is to make room for pedestrian infrastructure on both sides of the road. For now, we do not foresee widening of the road to accommodate traffic.

Will bicycle-specific infrastructure be included in this project? If no, why not?

As we’re currently in the design stage, a final decision has not been made. This idea has not been explored due to the restrictive space on 96 street, south of Hillcrest Drive and north of 108 Avenue. In addition, there are lack of opportunities east and west to connect bicycle specific infrastructure. The City’s Transportation Master Plan identified the need for a sidewalk on the east side of 96 Street. A need for bicycle infrastructure was not identified.

We’re currently at the design stage and looking for ideas and input, this fits with the Smart City criteria. Removing the service road is an idea being discussed that fits with low impact design and the goal is to find solutions to make the space work better. There is a need for the space to accommodate overland drainage, driveways, and a sidewalk. What occurs in the reclaimed space needs to be something that can be maintained by the adjacent property owners as it will serve as an extension of their front yard. Smart City and Low Impact Design is a consideration and if you want to discuss this further, please send your contact information to Eng_services@cityofgp.com and we can follow up.
